We got a late start today and hung about the camper for a while as the girls played with a kid from the camper next door. I caught up on the blog and Keith looked up unsuccessful ways to fix my computer unfortunately. I have been using Notepad on his PC to do the writing and realizing how much I rely on Word to keep me in check.
We headed to the Travertine Nature Center around 11:30 am where the girls picked up some Junior Ranger hats and booklets to get their badges. The nature center had a wonderful display of aquariums with bees, lizards, tarantulas, fish, and snakes that made their first scavenger hunt in the center really fun.
Little Niagara is a small falls on the Travertine river that runs through the whole area. The river comes from a series of springs, so the water was refreshingly cold in the 100 degree weather and you could jump off the falls into about 8 feet of water. At one point a whole football team came to jump off. We stayed at the falls for a while–ate lunch and found a section of the falls that had a little slide smoothed out of the rock.
We walked a few trails along the river and exploring some other parts of the river before heading back to the nature center to finish up the girls booklets and get Chickasaw Junior Ranger Badges! We also learned the land used to be Choctaw Land before the Chickasaw bought it by agreeing to a treaty and the reason this is a National Recreation Center instead of a National Park is that they allow boats in the lakes and most national parks don’t allow boats. Though I’m pretty sure we talked about renting a boat at Glacier, so I don’t know if this tracks. Maybe it has to do with the amount of boats? The girls got their badges and then we headed for re-ups (Walmart/gas) and then back to camp.
That evening we had a weird meal of hot dogs, pizza rolls (Elsa wanted pizza), a Caesar salad in a bag, and we used our Convection Microwave and baked some cookies. The girls played with the neighbors again before we hunkered down to get ready for bed.
