After some morning snuggles, a short playground visit, and the obligatory bathroom visits, we headed to Fort Supply Lake, Oklahoma which based on the Campendium reviews it was a place people wished they had spent more time and was “way out there.” Driving out of New Mexico the terrain became flatter as we drove through very small towns on the way to Fort Supply (stolen lands land of the Osage, Kiowa, and Comanche). Our site was right on Fort Supply Lake which was awesome. It looked like the rangers had dumped some clay on our site, perhaps it was flooded. We set up and watched what seemed like 100 geese do their thing right near our campsite, went the playground, and explored a bit before dinner which was semi-successful tacos (microwaved hard taco shells are not that great).
That night was rough. There was a huge storm with very loud/extreme lightning and hail which resulted in everyone including Goat Dog in the big bed and Keith exiled to Anna’s bed. Keith and I checked the local weather/emergency alerts and I watched the storm pass on my phone. After the storm we slept late and made pancakes for lunch (the time changes and 9 pm sunsets are creating much chaos on the sleep schedules). After lunch we went exploring around the lake and landed on a swimming hole near a tower. It was very windy the whole time here which was great for flying the kite Elsa got in Golden, CO. I think it has been broken and repaired about 3x now. The wind was very strong and constant. The swimming hole was nice since it was hot and sunny, there was a soft clay on the bottom of the water, but the amount of fish bones and heads on the beach turned me off to swimming here and we tried to make the girls keep their heads above water. It seemed like the lake was mostly for boating and fishing and I imagine people slice and dice their fish and put them in the water for them to wash up on shore.
After packing up on the shore we headed to the Office to ask where we could find wood. They directed us to a burn pile and we scavenged our wood from this pile. The whole experience was just a little off from the camping experiences. Not quite a camping resort with everything you needed (our site had water and electric but a clay mud pit in front), but swimming (with fish heads), and not scavenging in the trees for wood but going to a pre-collected pile of wood and boards with nails sticking out of them. We made our own fun as usual though by playing Yahtzee while making Oma’s Mac’n’cheese, building the fire and cooking a broccoli/garlic grill pack (it was awesome), and having s’mores. The girls then proceeded to fly the kite and play in the mud until we had to spray them down to get them ready for bed. Sitting around the fire on the lake with the wind blowing was lovely.
This night when taking the Murphy bed down my side table water was split but went unnoticed for about 5 minutes. We later found water dripping all down into my computer. I dried it all out and let it dry. Later, Keith and I spotted a white light in our camper. In the dark I went to cover it with my hand to see what it was and felt a flutter. It was a lighting bug! But we couldn’t find it there after.
