After our morning rituals, we headed to the beach. There was a 12 pm storm scheduled so we wanted to get a couple hours in before that. We realized it was difficult to tell time on this island because time kept switching between EST and CDT–the island was right on the boarder of the time zone. We loaded everything onto a spot on the beach and spent a great couple hours collecting sea shells, playing in the waves, and building a <3 sand castle. It’s a beautiful beach with fresh water washing stations, bathrooms, and a soda machine that didn’t work for us. We had a blast–there was Baywatch running into the water, body surfing, and learning how to play in the waves. The girls really haven’t had a lot of time on a Florida beach we realized, they were ecstatic.
As the thunder rolled in we headed back to camp for lunch and then drove into town for some ice cream. The rain had passed so we took Goat Dog to the public beach after visiting the Visitor Center. The girls really wanted to go up the lighthouse but it was closed on Thursdays. On the beach, the girls really wanted to go swimming again so we headed back to camp and changed and went back to our morning beach location. We sat right next to some people sitting in front of our heart castle. Anna went over to the castle and the woman said, “We made that! Do you like it?!” Anna replied, “No you didn’t! We did!!” All laughed and we explained we had come this morning. We continued to build a tunnel in sand, decorate it, and frolic in the waves a bit more before heading back to camp.
After dinner (Oma’s Mac’n’Cheese & Roasted Broccoli), we headed out yet again on an evening hike to the beach. This time we planned a smarter hike which was down our campsite road to the beach entrance right across the street. It was probably a 20 minute walk during sunset. We walked on the beach and the girls played in the waves. We found several crabs and imagined finding sea turtles and sting rays but none were available today.
We definitely filled our time at St. George Island and it was really beautiful. Not a lot of people in the state park and the beaches were beautifully clean. I told Keith on our walk back that I hadn’t seen ANY trash on the beach–amazing.
Note: I updated the map to what actually happened!
