We hung out at our campground today until after lunch. I worked out and then took a walk in the river, the girls watched some cartoons, ate breakfast, and Keith worked for a little bit. Then I had a meeting while Keith took the girls down the river to a little beach area on the riverbank.
After lunch we packed up some snacks and headed to the beach of Rabun Lake that was seemingly right across the street. On the way we hit an annoying detour due to construction that made what we thought was going to quick much, much longer. While driving we were passing this huge houses and lake cottages with boat houses to match, and then a huge storm erupted. By the time we got to the beach, the storm had passed, and the water was a little murky, but we made the best of it.
After the beach we headed around the lake in search of Minniehaha Falls Trail entrance because that is one of the reasons we stayed near this lake. We found the trail entrance and proceeded to drive around the rest of the lake on a dirt road—through some rivers—around the bends of the lake.
That night we tried our hardest to make a fire, but I think the wood was still wet, so after the S’mores we shut it down and made an early night of it.
Things we did:
- I walked in the river and sat on a rock before anyone was awake
- Broke my shoe and slipped on a rock about a foot from exiting the river (scraped my leg)
- The girls marked their territory in the river
- Read their new storybook
- Watched a very confusing construction crew be confusing
- Found the beach
- Swam at the beach and jumped off the lake dock
- I walked around trying to find maps in the campgrounds near the beach
- Saw a toad with a tail!
- Ate snacks and sat at the beach
- Took a drive around a lake
- Saw a sign for Minniehaha and followed it to find the trail head
- Found the Minniehaha trailhead!!
- Drove down a crazy dirt road
- Had salad and Oma’s mac n cheese! (we eat the same thing each week)
- Made a sad fire and went to bed early

Minniehaha looks like it has been discovered. 37 years ago–I don’t think we even had a sign. As I remember, parking was only along the road. Hope you get to play in the water there.
Wow, now it’s a thing I guess. There is still only about 7 places to park along the road but there is a little outcrop. I think about 4 other groups of people hiked up there while we were there, so those first minutes of arriving with no one there seemed extra special! <3
