Driving through the mountains to get to Standley Lake was beautiful and diverse: arid, red rocky, lush forests, snowy peaks (lovely). We stopped at the top of Monarch Crest and took the gondola up to 12,000 feet for some beautiful views and crisp air. We took our time, got some free popcorn and rocks from the gift shop and since they had a cell tower up there, I was able to call and solidify seeing Rebecca, Josh and their fabu boys the next day!!
We couldn’t find a full hookup spot around Boulder, but we did find Standley Lake State Park. It was our first-time dry camping (NO electric, water, or sewer). We knew we were going to hang out with Rew and family so we figured we could handle it and it was actually wonderful (thanks to Kim and Rew and their family’s hospitality).
We had a lake view at Standley Lake. Set up was simple because we just had to level, stabilize, and unhook the car. We put the fridge on propane to keep our fridge/freezer cool and headed over to Kim and family’s house till it was dark. When we got back to the camper the girls said they were hot, so we wet our hair in the outside shower (that was kind of a bummer—it was completely open for the whole world to see your parts). I think they were a little freaked that we didn’t have electricity, but we can light the whole trailer with 4 LED lanterns no problem. It wasn’t really hot though; it was breezy and probably around 70 degrees.
Things we did:
- Went to the top of Monarch Crest!
- Drove through the beautiful diverse Colorado Mountains
- Landed at Standley Lake Campground (beautiful—water view!)
- Saw Kim and family again at their house and hung out, saw their pad, dogs, and had dinner (Sooo nice—Thanks Kim and Ryan!!)
- Used the flush potties (thank goodness for flush potties)
- Wet our hair in the outside shower to cool off (but didn’t really need it, the girls just said they were hot but it was like 70ish with a nice breeze out)
- Slept with the windows and doors open (the wind coming through the camper was lovely)
