This was a great day. A cold 50-degree work out. My neck is still cricked so I think I might give it rest for a few days. We packed a picnic and headed out on a beautiful, secluded walk through the forest, under trees, beside a rapid filled river/waterfall, and across a bridge. We saw a tunnel across the river and Anna soooo wanted to go in it. It turned out to be the horse trail, so we went. Alas, horse trails have horse poop, it didn’t smell very good but there weren’t many people on the path!! Elsa particularly didn’t like it. We turned a corner to John’s Lake anyway and then backtracked to finish out our hike and then off to the rainbow stoned beach of McDonald Lake. We were almost the only ones on our little outlet for almost 3 or so hours. It was a really special magical Glacier National Park Day!
Things we did:
- “Mountain biking” on the campground hiking trail (Elsa: “I’m a mountain biker!!”)
- Packed lunches and headed to hike and find a beach in Glacier NP
- Parked at the Johns Lake Trailhead but it was blocked by a deer, so we started it backward and ended up beginning on the McDonald Falls Trailhead instead (This was beautiful and past the falls and followed the river for some time, then crossed a horse bridge, where you could continue to Johns Lake or take the horse trail.
- Took the horse trail (Elsa: “I hate this trail” Anna: “Horse Poop!” every time she saw horse poop. It was much more secluded but there was a lot of horse poop and to Anna the horse tracker’s excitement, horse tracks!
- Turned off to find Johns Lake (a quaint little lake)
- Anna proclaimed she had to poop so we rushed out to go to the toilet
- Found a toilet and it was just finished being cleaned (Anna did not poop)
- Looked for a lunch spot on McDonald Lake beach (there are lookouts you can part on and walk down to the beach along the Going to the Sun Road
- Found the fruity pebbles beach (McDonald Lake beaches) which we named “Rainbow Lake”
- Had lunch and played in the rocks
- Achieved hot stone rock therapy (laying on the rocks was a welcome heat compared to the cold water and we placed them each others bodies…cuz FUN!)
- Swam in the crystal-clear water
- Anna pooped on the beach (we found a spot behind a rock) and we picked it up like a dog
- I made a sausage potatoes soup while Keith and the girls went to the pool
- Then we walked and the girls “dirt biked” to the ice cream shop for ice cream and “dirt biked” back along the nature trail.

Such fun! I love days like this. I notice the the RV has become “home.” That is a good thing.
Yes, we are coming up on 22 days soon. I think that is when you create a habit…ut oh!
This day looks dreamy! Way to go girls, mountain biking, woot woot! The gorges are gorgeous 😉 And that beach.
